Auburn Basketball Picks Up Two 4-Stars

Written by Cole Locascio

Just days after Auburn picked up their first 4-star of the week, SF Danjel Purifoy, and mere hours after Bruce Pearl's NCAA show-cause probation was lifted, the Tigers have picked up their second 4-star of the week in PF Horace Spencer.

The 6-foot-8, 215 pound star out of Findlay Prep in Henderson (NV) is #56 overall according to 247sports.com's composite rankings. As of Sunday morning, Auburn was not the favorite to win Spencer's commitment -- that honor went to UNLV. However, Spencer unofficially visited the Plains this weekend, and decided that Auburn was the place for him.

Danjel Purifoy, a 6-foot-6, 190 pound small-forward from Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia committed to the Tigers on Friday during the Under Armour Slam Dunk Competition. According to the composite rankings on 247sports.com, Purifoy is the 49th ranked player overall (9th ranked SF), and holds a rating of 96.

DT Jauntavius Johnson Commits To Auburn

The Tigers' second commitment of the week comes in the form of a 4-star defensive tackle from Lincoln (AL). Johnson has been considered an Auburn lean ever since his visit during Big Cat Weekend back in May.

"This place feels like home." Johnson said.

Johnson is the Tigers' first defensive line commit and 19th total for the class of 2015, and when speaking of his future defensive line coach, the #20 tackle in the country had this to say...

"Coach Garner is a great coach." Johnson said after Big Cat Weekend. "He's a guy I'd want to get coached by."

With this addition, Auburn now stands at #7 on the 247sports team rankings.

Stephen Davis Jr. Commits To Auburn (VIDEO)

Written by Cole Locascio

Like father, like son -- following in the footsteps of his dad, a star running back for the Tigers in the '90s and three-time pro bowler in the league, Stephen Davis Jr. gave his verbal commitment to play for Gus Malzahn and the Auburn Tigers today. According to 247sports, Davis told Malzahn of his decision during a visit to the Plains last Sunday, but wanted to run things by his mother back in South Carolina first.

The 4-star junior from Irmo (SC) chose Auburn over the hometown Gamecocks of South Carolina.

"I didn't commit because my dad went there," Davis said. "I think it was the right thing to do. I had a great time there. It was a great experience."

Stephen Davis Jr. is Auburn's fourth commitment for the 2016 class, as he joins WR Nate Craig (5*), TE Landon Rice (3*), and APB Jalin Buie (3*).

Auburn has recruited Davis to play safety for the Tigers.

Big Cat Weekend 2014 Recap

Written by Cole Locascio

Auburn impresses top recruits...

  • DT Trent Thompson, the #1 recruit on 247sports, greatly enjoyed his time on the Plains. While the talented rising high school senior still lists Georgia as his leader, he said that Auburn has been recruiting him and his mother the hardest. Auburn is definitely making the race for the top athlete in the nation a close one as we head into the 2014 football season.
  • 5-star QB recruit, Torrance Gibson, not only attended Auburn's Big Cat Weekend, but also named the Tigers as his leader over the Vols after his visit. Earlier in the week, the dual-threat quarterback released his top-7 list which placed Auburn/Tennessee tied at the top, but after the event this weekend, that news has changed for the better for Malzahn and his staff.

Blind Commitment...

This weekend saw a huge commitment from the #3 fullback in the country, Chandler Cox out of Apopka (FL) -- a guy that wasn't even able to attend the big event because of his participation in a summer league game in Tampa this weekend.

Malzahn and the gang reel 'em in...

In what was a fairly dull recruiting weekend around the nation, Coach Gus Malzahn was able to bring in recruits from all around the country this weekend -- two kids drove from Ft. Lauderdale, a Georgia commit made the trip, and even a commit from that "other school" was in attendance as well.

Rival commits visit...

  • 5-star Georgia ATH commit, Terry Godwin from Callaway High School, attended Auburn's Big Cat Weekend, which was his sixth visit to the Plains dating back to April of last year. Godwin told Auburn Undercover that everyone is now "neck and neck" at this point. He lists Georgia, Auburn, and Alabama as his favorites, and doesn't plan on making a final decision until the very end of his recruitment process.
  • 4-star Alabama DL commit, Jonathan Ledbetter out of Tucker (GA), was another attendee this past weekend. This was Jonathan's second visit to Auburn since committing to the Tide back in January, which shows that Auburn is still very much in the mix as he's still weighing his options. Don't let that commitment fool you, folks -- Auburn has a great shot at landing this kid.

#3 FB Chandler Cox Commits To Auburn

Well, Big Cat Weekend was sure to bring at least one surprise commit -- who knew it would come from one who wasn't even able to attend the event. One of the top fullbacks in the country, Chandler Cox, committed to the Tigers Saturday afternoon. Cox, a member of the 2015 recruiting class, is from Apopka (FL), and is ranked the #3 fullback in the nation according to 247Sports.com.

"I just spoke to [Gus Malzahn]," Cox told 247sports. "He was so excited. He said this was probably one of the best days of him being at Auburn."

Cox will most likely play a role similar to that of former H-back, Jay Prosch, who was drafted by the Houston Texans in the NFL draft a few weeks ago.

Cox is the 15th commitment for the Tigers' 2015 class, which is currently ranked fourth on the 247sports.com team rankings.

Cox's commitment is solid, as he will not take any other college visits.

LB Elijah Sullivan Commits to the Tigers

The Tigers have picked up their fourth commit of the 2015 class in Tucker (GA) LB Elijah Sullivan. Sullivan, a 6-1, 215 pound high school junior, announced his commitment to the Tiger coaching staff during his visit this weekend for Auburn's junior day. Sullivan is one talented kid, as he not only plays on the defensive side of the ball, but also as running back on offense at Tucker High. The Auburn coaching staff looks to be recruiting the three-star athlete for its "Star" position in Ellis Johnson's 4-2-5 defensive scheme, which looks to be a pretty good fit for Sullivan who holds a 40-time of 4.56.

Elijah Sullivan joins QB Tyler Queen, WR Jason Smith, and CB Tony Bridges on Auburn's commitment list for the 2015 class.

Here's a quick minute-long video from Scout.com to showcase some of the junior's skills...

2014 JUCO CB Joseph Turner Signs With Auburn

Written by Cole Locascio

Well, it looks like Auburn is preparing for the departure of Kalavaraz Bessent following his drug arrest last Sunday. Joseph Turner, a three-star cornerback out of the College of San Mateo, signed with the Tigers on Wednesday night.

According to 247sports, Turner completed his official visit to Auburn on Wednesday, which ended with his eventual signature on a LOI. Turner has been committed to Washington State since last July, but an error by the JUCO defensive back left him one class short of qualifying in school with the Cougars. On National Signing Day, Washington State decided to pass up on the 6-2, 190 pound corner, as they pointed their eyes elsewhere for the cornerback position. Luckily for Turner, Auburn had a few scholarships leftover for the 2014 class, thus resulting in an offer for the #12 JUCO CB in the 247composite rankings.

Joseph Turner is the Tigers' 24th signee of the 2014 class, and he will have two years to play two seasons on the Plains.

2015 DB Tony Bridges Commits to Auburn

On Monday, Auburn landed its third commitment for the 2015 class. Defensive back, Tony Bridges out of Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C., is unrated by 247sports.com at the moment, but it certainly says something if the Auburn coaching staff is willing to offer and accept a commitment from the 6-2, 185 pound JUCO athlete this early in the process. According to 247sports.com, Auburn offered the defensive back a couple weeks ago. Bridges joins quarterback Tyler Queen and athlete Jason Smith on the Tigers' 2015 commitment list.

In high school, at Hattiesburg High in Mississippi, Bridges was an all-state selection, as well as a player in the Alabama-Mississippi Annual All-Star Game. During the 2013 season at Mississippi Gulf Coast, Bridges recorded 28 total tackles from the cornerback position.

Below is a video of Bridges returning an interception 99-yards for a touchdown...

UPDATE 10:22 am: In what would be a shocking turn of events, word is spreading that DE Davon Godchaux wants to flip his commitment from LSU to Ole Miss. His mother doesn't seem to be happy about the news.

UPDATE 12:16 pm: Lost in the Evans news, recent Auburn commit, Markell Boston, has sent his LOI to Auburn.

UPDATE 12:18 pm: And with that, all of the Tigers' commitments heading into the day have now signed with Auburn. Just trying to find the silver lining at this point.

UPDATE 1:21 pm: So now we have only Andrew Williams' announcement to watch. That comes up in about 40 minutes, so stay tuned for that. It's down to UGA, Clemson, and Auburn. Auburn looks to be the favorite at this point.

UPDATE 1:32 pm: Rashaan Evans has signed with Alabama.

UPDATE 1:59 pm: Andrew Williams' decision is coming up in a few minutes. You can watch it live on ESPN3.

UPDATE 2:22 pm: Andrew Williams commits to Auburn, and that should do it for Auburn's 2014 recruiting class. I'll keep you updated if I hear anymore surprises.

UPDATE: 3:01 pm: Andrew Williams has signed with Auburn, and that looks to be it for this year's recruiting class. Auburn should end ranked #6 on 247sports.com's team rankings. The future is bright. Thanks for joining me today, and War Eagle!
