Rambling around...

My thoughts coming off of a bye week...

Lane Kiffin's firing came off as a bit of a surprise... We all knew his goose was cooked, but what we didn't see coming was how early into the season it happened. Five games in, and the USC head-man is being pulled off of his own team bus at LAX...after a tough loss at that. It actually makes me feel pretty sorry for him.....nah, scratch that, it couldn't have happened to a bigger jerk. He should really stick to comedy...

Alabama fans are blowing things out of proportion again... All week I've heard the same "Ole Miss still hasn't scored" jokes. Earlier last week, the Rebel quarterback, Bo Wallace, made a comment about their upcoming game against the Tide, "Yeah, I think we can put points on them...We just have to show up and play." Wallace showed the most important attribute when playing a primetime game against a top team...confidence. What's a quarterback for the underdog supposed to say? "Oh no sir, we have no shot...we plan to get shut-out this weekend against that unstoppable Crimson Tide defense." No. Bammers need to take the win they earned and let the score speak for itself.

I took a look at a list of the top opponent payouts in college football this year... and Auburn had three of the top 12 payouts for the 2013 season. Over a million given to Arkansas State, close to a million for Wazzu, and $600,000 to Western Carolina. If athletic directors around the country are worried about attendance, from students and alumni, then stop scheduling these cupcakes! With TV showing more and more games each year, why would anyone in their right mind spend money on gas, parking, concessions, and the ridiculous ticket prices to see Auburn trample Western Carolina?   Not many, that's for sure, so it's a good thing that I'm not in my right mind...

How 'bout Tyler Murphy? The former backup only threw three incompletions in the Gators' game against Kentucky last Saturday. Don't worry, Muschamp...it only took you four weeks to realize that your should-be starter was sitting on the bench while you lost to Miami. The more you know...

After watching both the Alabama and LSU games... Georgia fans better be pulling hard for Alabama to beat LSU on November 9th. Remember, it's tough to beat a team twice...especially a good one (i.e. 2011 BCS National Championship).

On a bye week, I decided to head downtown to Bobby Dodd Stadium last Thursday... It's definitely a change of pace from an Auburn game, that's for sure. First of all, the game was technically "sold out", but the endzone upper deck was maybe half full, and that's being generous. The stadium only seats 55,000....you'd think that being in the city and on a primetime slot would generate a bigger crowd. At halftime, in typical Georgia Tech nerdy fashion, the band played a "tribute to math" for the home crowd....seriously.

The recent news of Alabama defensive back, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix's, suspension... has brought back the topic of compensating student athletes for their work on the field. I'm sorry, but is a free education not enough for these kids? People tend to forget that every student athlete on scholarship is receiving a $35,000 education for zip.

The recent "government shutdown" has meddled its way into the football world... The Air Force-Navy and Army-Boston College football games were in jeopardy of being postponed this weekend. It took a decision from our nation's secretary of defense to clear the games and allow the teams to play this weekend. Doesn't our country have enough to worry about? Good to know that football takes priority in politics right now...

See you on Saturday...
